8 April 1999: Mexican glassmaker Vitro said its new US$ 20 million plant in northern Mexico, constructed under a joint investment with General Electric Co., would open in May. “We are hoping to start operations in May,” said Jose Antonio Lopez, the firm“s financial director. Lopez said the new plant, in Apodaca city in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, would produce high-precision components mostly for export to GE plants in other countries. The components would be used in final products such as engines, turbine washers, X-ray machines and other hospital equipment. Lopez said the plant would generate US$ 20 million in sales during 1999.
