13 May 1999: A ceremony for Vietnam“s first float-glass factory was held recently at Phuong Lieu Commune, Que Vo District, Bac Ninh Province. “This is a meaningful event for the country“s construction materials industry,” said Deputy Minister of Construction Tong Van Nga. “With this factory, Vietnam would be able to cease importing flat glass and might export soon to regional countries,” he noted. Speaking at the ceremony, Nippon Sheet Glass president Y. Izuhara said with his firm“s 80 years of experience, Nippon and the other partners in the venture were determined to make the factory as competitive as any in the region. Set up in March 1995, the Vietnam Float Glass Company is a 50-year US$ 126-million venture involving Nippon, Tomen and the Vietnam Glass and Ceramics Corporation (Viglacera). Its white and coloured glass products, 2-12 mm thick, will be available on the market next month. Viglacera experts say that, including the 4.5 million square metre annual output of the Dap Cau Glass Factory, the country“s annual glass output will reach 32 million square metres following the inauguration of the Vietnam Float Glass Factory. The country will need an estimated 18 million square metres of flat glass this year and some 20 million square metres 2000.
