Residents of Aylesbury in the south of England can now take their flat glass for recycling at the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). Flat glass recycling is being trialled for the next four months and includes items such as greenhouse glass, windows, mirrors, sealed units and windscreens. The Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire is committed to increasing recycling rates in the county and hopes that the trial of flat glass at the Aylesbury HWRC will encourage residents to use the facility. If flat glass recycling proves to be successful in helping divert large amounts of waste from landfill, it will be extended to all HWRCs in the county. Flat glass can be recycled to make windows, boat and car components and fibreglass insulation for lofts. Councillor Martin Tett, chairman of the Waste Committee said, “We are committed to offering services which will help Buckinghamshire residents increase recycling rates to 45% by 2011. We“d like to encourage you to make use of this service, as it will help us to divert valuable materials from landfill. Although we do take most types of glass, we do encourage residents to speak to site staff if they are unsure about what can be recycled”. The service is free of charge to householders. A charge will be made for businesses.
