The Tamglass Group, Finnish specialists in tempering and laminating machinery, has reported that its new safety glass machine production unit was inaugurated by Mayor of Tampere, Jarmo Rantanen, in Tampere on 30 September. The company believes the 12,000m2 extension to be a safeguard for future development and growth of machinery production and glass processing volumes, which it says have grown strongly during the 1990s. The new production plant covers a total area of nearly 12,000 m2, of which production space accounts for over 8,000 m2 and offices and social facilities around 1,700 m2. The building occupies a total volume of 92,340 m3. Safety glass machinery production, product development and related functions from old Tamglass plants in Tampere and Orivesi have been centralized in the new facility which will produce glass tempering and laminating machines for the needs of the construction, furniture and automotive industries. The decision to build a new glass machinery plant for Tamglass, which is part of the Kyro Group, was taken in 1997 and construction work commenced in spring 1998. The manufacture of the first machines began at the plant in May this year. At the new plant, the assembly and testing of safety glass lines can be handled more efficiently before the lines are shipped to customers. This ensures the quality of deliveries in a growing production operation and shortens installation and start-up times at customers“ factories. The Orivesi plant will continue operating as a refurbishment and modernization unit for used safety glass machines. Tamglass reported that it also considers important, a development and extension programme for its glass processing plant. In the first stage of the development programme, the glass processing plant was extended by 1,500 m2 in 1998. Following the completion of the new machinery unit, the old machinery premises – which cover some 2,500 m2 – will be redeveloped into a further extension of the glass processing plant, which is expected to increase the safety glass production area to nearly 8,000 m2.
