26 November 1998: Around UK 1.5 million has been invested in Sunderland Glassworks Ltd, a glassware manufacturer based in Sunderland“s National Glass Centre, by private and public sources, according to a recent press report. No further details were given. Finance for the company was achieved with major help from adviser Grant Thornton, the report said. “In 1997 it was feared that Sunderland“s history as a glassmaking centre would be lost forever when the Hartley Wood factory, founded in 1845, closed. I am sure Sunderland Glassworks will play a key role in putting Sunderland back on the map as a major centre for the best in traditional and contemporary glass manufacture,” said Simon McIntosh, senior manager with Grant Thornton in Newcastle.
