7 May 1998: Sumgait“s glass factory in Azerbaijan might stop, due to accumulation of warehouse residue (236,000 sq. m. of window glass), said Mamedrza Pashayev, director of the factory. JSC Hazar owns 75% of shares of the factory. While commenting on the situation around the glass factory, Gudrat Kerimov, the chairman of JSC Hazar, said that the administration of JSC has repeatedly requested the Azeri Government to resolve the problems of the factory. Growth of customs tariffs in the past six months has reportedly led to increase in Sumgait“s glass cost price by 20%. Kerimov believes that in order to protect local manufacturers, the Government should cancel customs duties for import of raw materials. Sumgait“s Statistical Department reports that during the first quarter 1998, the glass factory produced 154,000 sq.m. of window glass, down 21% against the same period in 1997. While, Pashayev said that during first quarter 1998, the factory produced 280,000 sq.m of glass, up 60% against the same period in 1997.
