Poland“s glass waste recycling industry needs to meet European Union (EU) standards by 2007, Tomasz Chruszczow, chairman of the national association of glass packaging FOS said on 9 June 2004. The EU regulations related to packaging and packaging waste management require that between 50% and 56% of the glass packaging sold has to be recovered, and between 25% and 45% has to be recycled. It means that the amount of packaging to be recovered will be 2 milion tonnes, while 1 million tonnes of waste needs to be recycled in 2007. FOS estimated that some 750,000 tonnes of packaging waste was recovered in 2003. Poland needs to promote selective waste collection and municipalities need to provide additional containers for glass, paper and plastics in order to meet EU requirements. Polish glassworks are now able to remelt 500,000 tonnes of glass waste, FOS added. There are only 30,000 containers for the collection of glass waste in Poland and 25% of these are for clear glass. Poland needs to provide an additional 53,000 containers for clear glass and 36,000 containers for coloured glass in order to meet EU standards on waste management by 2007.
