A unit of Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo SA is building a MXN 75 million (USD 6.6 million) glass bottle plant in the Gulf state of Veracruz. Modelo has already broken ground on the plant, which should enter service by early 2005, state economic development minister Everardo Sousa said in a press release on 17 June 2004. A Modelo official explained that the plant is being built by Direccion de Fabricas, in which Modelo has a 41% stake. Direccion de Fabricas is the brewer“s largest supplier of glass bottles. Other glass makers, including Vitro SA, also produce bottles for Modelo, brewer of Corona and other popular beers. The new plant, in the municipality of Tierra Blanca, is expected to generate 1,250 jobs and produce 1.3 million bottles a day. Modelo, Mexico“s largest brewer, generated a net profit of MXN 4.82 billion on sales of MXN 40.45 billion in 2003. U.S. beer giant Anheuser-Busch Cos Inc. owns half of Modelo.
