10 June 1999: According to a recent report, glassware manufacturer Luigi Bormioli is to market and distribute a new product line from Italian glassware company Vetri delle Venezie (Caldier), which was to be unveiled at the Tabletop Show in New York recently. Although Luigi Bormioli, which annually generates US$ 25 million in US sales and US$ 150 million worldwide, is known for its top-quality housewares and drinkware, it lacked a complete glassware collection, according to company president Marcel Trepanier. The exclusive agreement with Vetri delle Venezie gives Luigi Bormioli a comprehensive assortment. “I wanted to do something different,” said Trepanier. “I believe in the glassware business.” “This marriage is perfect from many standpoints,” he added. “The companies set similar high-quality standards and price points. We complement each other well.” Sixty items from seven glassware categories under the name Caldier were to be displayed at the Tabletop Show at retail prices ranging between US$ 15 and US$ 25. Products were grouped in design families designated by number, and packaged and merchandised under distinct colour schemes. For example, in order to make it easier for retailers to merchandise the assortment and for customers to mix and match the patterns, all products in the Caldier 1 design were in orange packaging, Trepanier said. Vetri delle Venezie“s US$ 150 million in annual worldwide sales is generated mostly from manufacturing glass automobile headlights. However, according to the report, since automobile manufacturers now depend more on plastic than glass for headlights, Vetri delle Venezie will fill the gap at its glass plants by manufacturing tabletop products. Its technical and design expertise in glass manufacturing was a big selling point with Luigi Bormioli, said Trepanier. Customers know Luigi Bormioli for its clean, contemporary lines. The Caldier line will take the company in the same design direction, with looks that “will sell well ten years from now,” Trepanier said. Items will be shown at Luigi Bormioli“s showroom at 41 Madison Avenue in New York and will be shipped in early August. Products from the two companies will be shipped together. Vetri delle Venezie is based in the northern town of Verona, Italy, not far from Luigi Bormioli“s factory.
