LG.Philips LCD Co., the world“s second-largest LCD maker, recently started construction of an LCD module factory in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, industry sources said 28 June 2007. The company concluded an agreement on the set-up of the factory with the city authorities in 2005, and established the Guangzhou unit in August 2006. Construction of the new factory is aimed at meeting the expected boom in demand for LCD modules, used in flat-panel TV screens, ahead of the Beijing 2008 summer Olympics, the sources said. The factory will be built on a 33,000-square-meter site with the goal of beginning production in the 4Q 2007. The factory in Guangzhou will ultimately be expanded to an LCD complex on 660,000 square meters of land, the sources said. The LG.Philips“ Guangzhou complex, if completed, will be the third of its kind, following similar models in the Chinese city of Nanjing and in Poland, the sources added. LG.Philips is a joint venture between Korea“s LG Electronics Inc. and Dutch Royal Philips Electronics NV.
