Japan“s Hoya Corp. said it has acquired five eyeglass manufacturing companies of Belgium“s Buchmann group. The major Japanese eyeglass maker said it aims to reinforce its sales network in Belgium, France and East European countries using Buchmann“s strong distribution channels. The five purchased companies include Buchmann Optical Industries of Belgium and Buchmann MOM of Hungary. Their total sales amounted to BFr 1,871 million in 1998. The purchase, however, did not include the Buchmann group“s lens processing equipment division. Hoya operates nine sales offices in Europe, including those in the Netherlands, Britain and Germany.
