Glassolutions enhances commuter safety and security at Blackfriars Station

The new London Blackfriars is the only station in the UK to span a river. The station creates a better interchange between Tube and National Rail services for all passengers, and is being redeveloped and extended as part of the GBP 6 billion congestion-busting Thameslink programme.

Blast-enhanced security glazing from Glassolutions – the company formerly known as Solaglas – offers improved safety for commuters at London’s new Blackfriars Station, which is being redeveloped and extended as part of the GBP 6 billion congestion-busting Thameslink programme.
The company supplied its Spiderglass bolted glazing system, which has achieved blast-mitigation certification to ISO 16933. It has been installed by glass contractor Astec Projects Limited, into the 350 sq.m. air vent shaft in the new north entrance, which has been redeveloped into a curvaceous glass building containing a shared ticket hall for National Rail and London Underground.
Alex Hayden, Senior Project Manager at Astec Projects Limited said the Glassolutions system was chosen for its look and its blast-mitigation performance. He added: “This is a challenging, landmark project for London that needs to combine statement design with great functionality. Glassolutions has provided tremendous support including technical drawings, literature and sample products to help us to deliver the architect’s vision.”
Huw Lovegrove, Business Manager for Glassolutions Structural Supply business said: “Protecting people and buildings from the impact of an explosion is a critical architectural design challenge. Our Spiderglass bolted glazing system provides a blast-mitigation solution for maximum protection without compromising structural integrity or aesthetics.
“Effective blast-enhanced glazing is crucial in absorbing the impact of the blast and minimising injuries from flying glass. This is particularly important for an air vent shaft, which needs to maintain its functionality in the event of an underground explosion.”
Construction on both banks of the River Thames plus extensive work on Blackfriars Rail Bridge is creating a landmark rail station that is bright, modern and at the heart of London’s travel infrastructure.
