Emerging Display Technologies (EDT), a Taiwan-based maker of ITO-glass capacitive touch panels, will expand its monthly production capacity for LCD substrates from 150,000 panels to 220,000-250,000 in June 2011, according to the company. EDT has two factories for array (front-end) LCD products and colour filters separately located in southern Taiwan and southern China, with the former undertaking production of touch panels. Currently, EDT produces 7-inch touch panels mainly with 3-inch models accounting for a small proportion of output. The increased monthly capacity of LCD substrates will be equivalent to that of 150,000 7-inch touch panels a month, EDT pointed out. EDT currently utilizes more than 80% of its touch panel capacity. EDT“s existing clients of 7-inch touch panels include ViewSonic and China-based white-box vendors. In addition, EDT is in the certification process for 7-inch touch panels by vendors including Acer and Dell as well as Taiwan-based vendors of tablet PCs. EDT expects orders for 7-inch touch panels to double in the second half of 2011, with the proportion of total revenues estimated to rise from 20% to 40%.
