16 April 1998: Japan-based Asahi-Schwebel Co. is expected to set up a company in the Philippines this month to produce and sell electronic fibre glass fabric, the Osaka-based subsidiary of Asahi Chemical Industry Co. said recently. The joint venture with Germany“s CS-Interglas AG, Asahi-Schwebel Interglas Corp., is planned to begin operations in the latter half of 1999, Asahi-Schwebel officials said, although the production site has not yet been decided. The Japanese and German companies are expected to equally provide the new firm“s capital of US$ 25 million. Both companies are affiliated with Clark-Schwebel Inc., the largest US producer of glass fabric. Demand for glass fabric, primarily for multilayer circuit boards for the electronics industry, is growing at annual rates of 7 to 10% in Japan and 15 to 25% in the Southeast Asian nations and Taiwan. Asahi-Schwebel Interglas will reportedly supply its products to the Asian region from the Philippines.
