Wiegand-Glas to reactivate railway at Steinbach am Wald plant

Eco2Rail - the greener logistics

Wiegand-Glas started work to renovate its railway connection in its plant in Steinbach am Wald, Germany. The company decided to achieve a higher rail intensity in the inbound and outbound transport of goods and raw materials.

For Wiegand-Glas, the transfer to the safe and sustainable rail transport is now a real alternative to the classic transport on the road. The more than 80 million tonne-kilometres by rail since 2013 already speak a clear language.

The commissioning of the rail connection is planned for 2022. The plant will then be supplied daily with wagons from the DB Cargo transshipment station in Saalfeld. In addition to loading the company’s products, it will then also be possible to obtain raw materials, such as soda ash, by rail.

With every truck load of products that transferred to rail, about 96 grams of CO2 per tonne and kilometre are saved, compared to pure road transport, according to scientific calculations. The topic of sustainability has been in the Wiegand DNA for a very long time and, of course, also in Wiegand logistics.
