Vitro introduces new automotive encapsulation equipment

Crinamex (one of Vitro’s automotive glass plants) has concluded the installation of a new encapsulation system used to inject a moulding perimeter around the glass with a highly resistant material that allows glass to return to its original shape after being deformed.

Located in the State of Mexico, Crinamex (one of Vitro’s automotive glass plants) has concluded the installation of a new encapsulation system. It is comprised of two high pressure presses used for glass encapsulation in ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).
The function of the new equipment is to inject a moulding perimeter around the glass with a highly resistant material that allows glass to return to its original shape after being deformed.
The two presses are operated by eight people in each of three shifts, allowing for high-pressure manipulation of the material. Furthermore, the design of moulds, glass and integrated components are a technological development of high-impact.
With this development, the car owner can attach a rack on the vehicle’s roof and hold it firmly to the vehicle by raising the lip of the glass moulding. When the rack is removed, the moulding recovers its original shape again and adheres to the car roof with its original appearance. Racks are used on vehicles for transporting luggage, bicycles, or bulky items.
To date, Crinamex has encapsulated thousands of rear side windows with very successful results in productivity and efficiency. “The EPDM material we are using replaces the previous injection system that used PVC, whose manufacturing process releases toxic gases into the atmosphere,” said Miguel Arroyo, manager for Technology at Vitro’s Flat Glass business unit.
