Vitro S.A. de C.V., through its Spanish subsidiary Vitro Cristalglass and Spanish architect Luis de Garrido has created Vitrohouse, a home built entirely of glass. The project was successfully displayed 11-16 April at international construction show Construmat in Barcelona. First envisioned two years ago by Luis de Garrido, the project took shape thanks to Vitro Cristalglass, the company chosen by Garrido to produce the glass. “The Barcelona Fair, responsible for organizing Construmat, became interested in the project and offered us space free of charge to display the house” said Vitro Cristalglass Marketing Head Alberto Gmez. The house was built almost entirely of laminated glass (three 8 millimeter plates). Walls, floors, and ceilings were made of laminated glass in different colors and thickness. “Certain panes have translucent treatments and special designs to give the house an innovative, futuristic touch,” Gmez said. Almost the entire construction process, which took one month, was carried out by PKV, a company specializing in large scale glass installation, such as in airports, malls, and hotels, among others. The investment in glass and fixtures was approximately EUR 60,000, said Gmez. “This project comes under the heading of “Sustainable Construction“ or “Sustainable Architecture“, a trend that builds upon the use of durable materials that do not harm the environment,” Gmez explained. He added that plans are afoot to exhibit the Vitrohouse project at the “Prncipe Felipe” Science Museum in the City of Arts and Sciences at Valencia (eastern Spain).
