Vetropack: demand for glass packaging units up; record turnover in fiscal year 2011

Vetropack, one of the leading producers of glass packaging in Europe, will continue to place importance on the advantages of glass packaging, with investments that will guarantee its long-term ability to compete.

Vetropack Austria, a company of the Vetropack Group and Austria’s leading packaging glass manufacturer, achieved in fiscal year 2011 a turnover of EUR 167 million which as a result turned out to be 6.4% higher than the previous year. Sales increased by 6% to 1,486.5 million units of glass packaging sold. This gratifying development confirms the renewed increased demand for glass packaging.
The domestic sales volume was over the EUR 100 million mark for the first time in the history of the company. Compared to the previous year, there was a 4% increase, amounting to EUR 100.1 million (2010: EUR 96.2 million). Almost all segments recorded increases. The beer and soft drinks sectors demonstrated particularly positive market trends.
Export transactions of Vetropack Austria were clearly more than 10% higher than the previous year, with EUR 66.8 million. (2010: EUR 60.7 million). The increases in the beer and soft drink sectors can be primarily traced to intense cooperation with major international clients.
The main focus of investments in 2011 was on overhauling the green glass furnace at the Kremsmünster site and reconstruction of the recycling plant in Pöchlarn.
Vetropack Austria will also make investments in both Austrian sites in 2012, where focus will be on repairing the green glass furnace at the Pöchlarn site.
These investments guarantee Vetropack Austria’s long-term ability to compete and, as a result, the positions of 622 employees at both sites in Pöchlarn and Kremsmünster.
Glass packaging has turned out to be an essential component of many successful market strategies in 2011 as well. In this manner, Vetropack Austria, together with foreign and domestic clients, launched a series of new products that prove the innovative strength of the markets and glass as a packaging material in particular.
In 2012, Vetropack will continue to unabatedly place importance on the advantages of glass packaging: Its high quality, the absolutely neutral material properties that make it predestined for food and drink as well as its environmental neutrality are the pillars of its success.

With production facilities in Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia and the Ukraine, Vetropack has an excellent market position in the economic area of Eastern Europe.
In fiscal year 2011, the Vetropack Group achieved a consolidated turnover of CHF 589.4 million (EUR 477.8 million) and as a result of the negative effects of currency was 8.3% below the value for 2010. Adjusted for currency, however, turnover surpassed the value for the previous year by 1.6%. Consolidated annual net profit reached CHF 59 million (EUR 47.8 million), (2010: CHF 38.7 million or EUR 28.0 million). In total, Vetropack sold 4.17 billion units of glass packaging (2010: 4.36 billion).
The positive market environment allowed the Vetropack group to put the sales focus on glass packaging with higher added value in all markets. Additionally it was able to rebuild its low stocks in order to react more flexibly to market needs. At the end of 2011, the Vetropack employed 2,971 staff members.
