Saint-Gobain Abrasives Inc. said 23 January 2003 that 16 non-union employees in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA were made redundant. Saint-Gobain, which has approximately 1,750 employees at its Greendale facility, cited the soft economy as the reason for the reductions. The company said 27 jobs in the United States and Canada, including seven in Worcester, were cut from the company“s abrasives sales and marketing operations. Another nine sales and general administrative positions were also eliminated in Worcester, a company spokesman said. Saint-Gobain, part of Compagnie de Saint-Gobain of Paris, produces abrasives and industrial ceramics at its Worcester facility.
