In May 2003, soda ash exports from the Ukraine fell by 14.7% or 6,037 tons to 35,157 tons, compared to May 2002. Spain was the main consumer of Ukrainian soda ash in May 2003, buying 28% of the Ukraine“s total output. In the period January-May 2003, soda ash exports rose by 5.7% compared with the same period 2002, to 144,095 tons worth USD 13.367 million (136,334 tons worth USD 13.724 million in January-May 2002). In April 2003 soda ash exports rose by 72.8% compared with April 2002, to 34,539 tons. In May 2003, production of soda ash rose by 13.8% or 8,000 tons compared with May 2002, to 66,000 tons. In January-May 2003, production of soda ash rose by 0.6% or 1,700 tons compared with January-May 2002, to 270,690 tons. In 2002, exports of soda ash fell by 2.1% compared with 2001, to 329,059 tons worth USD 32.686 million (335,953 tons worth USD 34.843 million in 2001). The Crimean soda plant (Krasnoperekopsk, Crimea) is the only producer of the exported soda (A brand).
