According to a recent report, green-thinking revellers have been recycling more glass than ever before in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. Figures from the 68 glass recycling sites dotted throughout the area show that double the normal amount was banked. Now, recycling officer Kristy Carrigan is urging people to remember to recycle their clear glass as well as beer and wine bottles. “In this country the majority of glass produced, 68%, is clear, but the majority of glass collected for recycling is green at 56%,” said Carrigan. “This is due to the large amount of wine and beer imported into the UK and we urgently need to redress the balance by making sure we recycle all glass bottles and jars, particularly those in clear glass.” Glass recycling banks can be found at supermarkets around the district, as well as at the council“s mini-recycling centres in some villages and towns. “People using these facilities will notice one or two changes,” said said Carrigan. “We have now provided separate containers for green, brown and clear glass, which is necessary if we are to meet national recycling targets.”
