Dartington Crystal based in Devon, southwest England, has decided to “arrest” ongoing financial difficulties by introducing a three day week for most employees although there is no certainty staff are safe from future redundancy. A company official said: “During the year, Dartington Crystal has experienced a reduction in demand from the UK and export market that has led to a decline in sales – which is not unique to Dartington and has affected all areas of the gift and tableware market. The company will endeavour to limit wherever possible the number of employees this will effect.” Discussions are under way with factory partners, shareholders and public authorities and the private sector regarding possible restructuring. Staff at the Dartington-owned Barbican Glassworks in Plymouth, also in Devon, will not be affected by plans by the cut to employees“ working hours at its headquarters. The company has also assured employees at its 14 sales outlets around the UK that they will not be affected by the cut backs.
