Thailand“s leading float-glass manufacturer, Thai-Asahi Glass Plc, is planning to increase its number of exports to India, Laos, Burma and other markets after its second plant is completed in mid-1997. A company spokesman announced that its second plant, valued at three billion baht (US$ 120 million), is now under construction in the eastern province of Rayong and will have an annual production capacity of 182,500 tonnes. The company“s first plant, located in Bangkok“s neighbouring province of Samut Prakan, has a production capacity of 164,250 tonnes per year. “Currently, the company exports about 20% of the total production (from the first plant) to countries in Asia and the Middle East,” the spokesman said. “Upon completion of the second plant, Thai-Asahi Glass will become the second-largest glass manufacturer in southeast Asia,” the spokesman said, adding that Indonesia was now the number one producer in the region.
