Solvay Sodi, a Bulgarian soda ash maker of Devnya, has planned 296 redundancies for 2000, the management said. The decision to make personnel cuts was taken by the management in conjunction with the collective bargaining committee, representing the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions and the Podkrepa Labour Confederation. The workforce numbered 1,568 as of 1 January 1. It was decided to lay off 133 workers so as to meet the standards of labour organization and productivity of the best soda ash makers of Solvay Group, and 142 redundancies will result from contracting out social services. Solvay said the move will help the management concentrate on the specific chemical line of business and will lead to the setting up of specialized companies supplying services to Solvay Sodi and to other industrial enterprises in Devnya.
