During the upcoming edition of Seatec 2007, to be held at Marina di Carrara in Italy on 1 February 2007, architects and top designers will discuss the use of glass in nautical design at the conference “The Technological Leap of Materials”. The use of glass in the construction and nautical sectors will also be the subject of the presentation by Carl Pickering of the Rome studio of Lazzarini & Pickering. “Nowadays, with regards to the use of materials, there are no longer precise divisions between different sectors. We already use carbon in the construction industry” says Carl Pickering, adding “and we are using glass for a Nautor Custom 82. This is a very interesting topic of research for us”. This material becomes an efficient element also for the covering of open boats. “If, until now, the surface of glass of a boat was only confined to the windscreen” Roy Capasso, marketing manager of Cantieri di Baia, pointed out “glass is now being used also as a covering element in traditionally open areas, to mitigate the idea of being closed in. Boats tend to have higher broadsides, which offer more comfortable spaces inside, and glass is used more and more to create large windows. In other words, it gives the idea of an open boat even when the area is reduced”. The history, the evolution and the future possibilities of the use of glass in pleasure boats will be the topic discussed by Portuguese designer Luiz De Basto, the creator of the Canados open 90“. “Glass gives an added value to a yacht: on the one hand, it allows more light in, while improving vision to the outside, on the other hand, it implies the use of avant-garde technologies to guarantee safety on board. We can say that a designer does a good job if it results in perfect equilibrium between aesthetics and technology”. Seatec 2007, the fifth edition of the show to be held at the CarraraFiere fair centre, is the only Italian fair dedicated to the sector of products and services for the construction of pleasure boats and ships of all sizes.
