SCHOTT AG celebrated its 25th anniversary in Singapore at the end of September 2007 with both customer and employee celebrations. “Singapore is an excellent place for us to reach the growing demand for high-quality special glass and material solutions for industry across Southeast Asia, and will continue to be a vital strategic location for serving our Asian customers”, said Chairman of the Board of Management of SCHOTT AG Prof. Dr.-Ing. Udo Ungeheuer. SCHOTT AG is based in Mainz, Germany and is a world-leading manufacturer of special glass and materials for industrial and consumer applications. The company employs 180 people in Singapore, achieving total annual turnover of SGD 76 million with both its sales office and Electronic Packaging manufacturing activities. The company established a sales office in Singapore in July of 1982, selling mainly semi-optical glasses to the watch and eyeglass industry as well as laboratory glasses and its fire-resistant glass “Pyran”. SCHOTT boosted its presence in 1994 with the establishment of SCHOTT Electronic Packaging Asia, a manufacturing site for components which house sensitive electronic components such as chips, sensors and oscillating quartz crystals. The company has based its Corporate Asian headquarters, SCHOTT Asia, in Singapore and uses the location as a sales base for a wide range of products for industry in the entire Southeast Asian region. Ungeheuer expects growth in Asia in the near future to be strongest in SCHOTT“s pharmaceutical packaging, solar and electronic packaging businesses. Currently, 20% of SCHOTT“s annual turnover is made in Asia. SCHOTT opened its first sales office in Asia in Japan in 1966 and its first manufacturing plant in Malaysia in 1974. Today SCHOTT employs more than 2000 people at seven production locations in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore and at 14 sales offices in the region.
