Samsung Electronics has reportedly been selling its flat panels with aggressive pricing, causing the already fragile panel pricing to drift downward further in the second half of August, according to industry sources. Prices for large-size panels were affected mostly by Samsung“s pricing strategy, with quotes for TV panels being reduced by 5% and those for IP panels dropped by 2-3%. The sources also indicated that LCD vendors in the end market will probably cut their product prices drastically before year-end with flat panel makers supporting such marketing efforts by offering even more competitive panel prices in the fourth quarter. Some panel makers have lowered their capacity utilization rates to 70-75% and could reduce the ratios to 50% in September, the sources noted.
