Samsung Corning of South Korea said it will invest 400 billion won to expand its production facilities for TFT-LCD plate glasses. The company said that by the year 2001, the company will emerge as the world“s biggest supplier of plate glass with a production capacity of an annual 15 million sheets. The company said that it will join forces with US-based Corning to develop a new plate glass with a width of 0.5-0.6 mm, which will be slightly thinner than the currently offered plate glass (0.7 mm). “Demand for TFT-LCDs is on rapid rise worldwide, and the market is enjoying an average 30% growth per year,” said a company official. “By the time we complete the expansion of our production facilities, we will be equipped with the capacity to fully provide the plate glass needed by domestic TFT-LCD makers in manufacturing their products.” Domestic TFT-LCD suppliers include Samsung Electronics and LG Philips LCD, the world“s two biggest TFT-LCD suppliers, and Samsung Corning hopes to increase its profits and heighten the competitiveness of its plate glass when it completes the expansion of its production facilities.
