Austrian Riedel Glas, manufacturer of glass and porcelain, has reported record growth in turnover and profits for 1995. According to owner and company director Georg Riedel, turnover advanced to Sch 385 million from Sch 370 million in 1994 and pre-tax operating profits increased to Sch 35 million (Sch 27 million in 1994). Riedel regards eastern Asia, where turnover jumped by 70% in 1995, as a promising market, as well as Germany and the USA. New distribution channels in Germany are expected to generate a 20% increase in turnover in 1996. Riedel said that the biggest issue at the moment was the introduction of flexibility in working hours and shifts. As 40% of the company“s turnover is achieved in the Christmas period, it is crucial that a new flexible working system is introduced. In the past, Riedel offered eight-week restricted contracts to workers in order to avoid dismissals.
