2 July 1998: US-based industrial gases firm Praxair, Inc. has announced two multi-million dollar contracts to provide nitrogen and hydrogen to glass manufacturer Guardian Industries Corporation at its facilities in Geneva, New York and Resende, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Praxair will produce 60 tonnes per day (53 metric tonnes) of 99.999% pure cryogenic nitrogen at each of the Guardian Industries facilities using small on-site nitrogen generating plants. Praxair will also deliver one tonne per day (0.9 metric tonne per day) of hydrogen to each of the facilities. According to a recent company report, the contract represents Praxair“s continuing strategy to supply customers with efficient, low-cost, reliable supply systems at their site, lessening the need for merchant liquid deliveries from external locations. Praxair now serves nearly 25% of its customers in this category through small on-site plants. Guardian uses the nitrogen and hydrogen as inerting gases in its float glass furnaces. The controlled atmosphere helps prevent oxidation, which would cause impurities and imperfections in the glass during the forming process.
