PPG to debut two new architectural glasses, powder coating

PPG will be present at the upcoming AIA National Convention and Design Expo with two new architectural glasses and a new powder coating. One of the new glass products is a passive-solar, low-emissivity (low-E) glass with improved U-values, while the other is a self-cleaning glass designed for skylights, canopies and other sloped glazings on commercial buildings.

PPG Industries will unveil two new architectural glasses at the 2012 American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) National Convention and Design Exposition in Washington, D.C., 17-19 May, along with a new DURANAR® powder coating for metal roof applications.
One of the new glass products PPG will introduce is a passive-solar, low-emissivity (low-E) glass with improved U-values that is engineered for commercial buildings in heating-dominated climates. The other is a self-cleaning glass designed for skylights, canopies and other sloped glazings on commercial buildings.
PPG will also exhibit a new Duranar powder coating for metal roofs that is designed as a more durable alternative to traditional stone-coated steel roofing systems. Duranar liquid coatings with “print-coated” decorative painted patterns, designs and colours for metal panels by PPG’s industry partner, Steelscape, Inc., will be featured as well.
Other PPG products on display at the 2012 AIA show will include:
* Duranar powder coatings, with the durability, brilliant colour, mica effects and custom-batching capability of Duranar liquid coatings and virtually no volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
* Duranar ULTRA-COOL® infrared-reflective coatings, which deflect heat from buildings to reduce urban heat island effect and air-conditioning costs. They meet cool roof requirements for ENERGY STAR®, Title 24 and LEED® criteria, and they are available in a broad palette of light and dark colours.
* Duranar VARI-COOL® coatings, which combine ULTRA-Cool infrared-reflective technology with pearlescent, polychromatic coatings that shift colour according to ambient lighting conditions and the angle from which they are viewed.
* SOLARBAN® 72 STARPHIRE® glass, a solar control, low-E glass that has the industry’s highest light-to-solar-gain (LSG) ratio at 2.38. It is designed to provide high visible light transmittance, exceptional clarity and superior solar control performance.
* Solarban R100 glass, a neutral-reflective, solar control, low-E glass with a 1.79 LSG ratio that is up to 27 better than those of competing neutral-reflective, low-E glasses. Energy modelling demonstrates that, compared to leading neutral-reflective, low-E glasses, Solarban R100 glass can cut annual energy consumption by 7 to 12% and initial heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment cost by up to 10%.
* Solarban 70XL glass, the industry’s first triple-silver-coated, solar control, low-E glass, provides an optimum balance of visible light transmittance, solar control performance and colour consistency. Energy modelling shows that Solarban 70XL glass, which recently surpassed 120 million square feet in shipments, can cut annual energy costs by 3 to 5% compared to other solar control, low-E glasses while diminishing upfront capital for cooling equipment by up to 10%.
* One-inch Starphire glass is made with a proprietary low-iron formulation to create one of the industry’s most transparent glasses. Unlike conventional clear glass, the clarity of Starphire glass actually intensifies as it gets thicker.
