PPG Industries has become the first architectural glass manufacturer in the United States to earn Cradle to Cradle Certification at the Silver tier for all its architectural glass products. PPG earned the certification after a thorough audit was conducted of the materials used in the formulation, production and manufacture of its architectural glass. Cradle to Cradle Certification, awarded by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), is an independent evaluation of the total impact of a product on human health and the environment throughout its life cycle, from the sustainability of its material ingredients and their ability to be reutililized, to how efficiently water and energy are used in its manufacture. The product manufacturer also must demonstrate socially responsible corporate practices that encompass social fairness, ethical business standards and environmental stewardship. Building projects seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council may be able to earn one point in the Innovation in Design category by using Cradle to Cradle Certified products. PPG“s architectural glasses can also contribute to LEED certification of building projects due to their ability to transmit light and block solar heat, minimizing reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. Products include Solarban solar-control low-e glasses, which can help buildings achieve up to 13% annual energy savings; Oceans of Color spectrally selective tinted glasses, which provide excellent solar control in a versatile range of ocean-inspired tints; and Sungate passive low-e glasses. In addition to PPG“s spectrally selective glass, the Cradle to Cradle Certification applies to all PPG architectural glasses, which also include clear glass, Starphire ultra-clear glass, Vistacool and Solarcool reflective glasses, and the earth-tone series of performance tinted glasses.
