29 December 1997: US glass group PPG Industries has completed the acquisition of German chemicals group BASF container coatings business, while BASF has bought PPG“s surfactants and paper chemicals business. The acquisition of the container coatings business expands PPG“s industrial products portfolio and geographic reach, making PPG a leading global full-line supplier of coatings for food, aerosol and other containers and packaging. PPG, with a total 1996 sales of US$ 7.2 billion is the world“s largest manufacturer of automotive and industrial coatings, as well as a major global producer of flat and fabricated glass, fibre glass and chemicals.
