Italian tyres, cable systems and real estate giant Pirelli has won the contract from the Emirates Telecommunications & Marine Services for a sub-sea fiber optic system that will link Kuwait city with Geneveh in Iran. The broadband link will carry voice, data and multimedia traffic at a maximum capacity of 10Gb per second. It will be the first fiber optic link carried out by Pirelli across the Persian Gulf. The contract specifies a 350 kilometer long undersea fiber optic cable, with a further 50 km on land. The link represents an important phase in the rapid development of communications in the region, said Mauro Sacchetto, managing director of Pirelli Submarine Telecom Systems. The project is being sponsored by the Ministry of Communications of Kuwait and the Iranian Telecommunication Company.
