Various reports in financial newspapers worldwide recently claimed that Paolo Scaroni, actual head of Pilkington, the UK glass giant, was to succeed Domenico Cempella at the head of Alitalia. This news caused a loss of 5% to the British company shares. Mr. Scaroni is, in fact, managing the re-organization and re-launching of Pilkington and is considered as an extremely valuable asset for the company“s future. The company is growing steadily; in fact, the company shares have earned about 40% since September 2000, increasing Pilkington“s profits from about UK 500 million to UK 2 billion. Mr. Scaroni actually admitted that his name had been mentioned as a possible candidate, but said that for the moment he had no intention of leaving Pilkington. Having started the restructuring programme in 1998, Pilkington launched the expansion phase in autumn 2000, with joint ventures with the French glass firm Saint Gobain in view of future plants in France, Poland and Brazil.
