Owens-Illinois, Inc., announced 3 December 2004 that Stephen P. Malia has been named senior vice president and chief human resources officer, effective 16 December 2004. In this role at the glass containers giant, Mr. Malia will lead a formal global HR network to develop and implement integrated and best-in-class HR processes. Core responsibilities will include HR strategy, talent management and succession planning, compensation and benefit strategies, training and development, and labor and employee relations strategies. Mr. Malia and his team will partner with business leadership to develop a comprehensive people strategy for Owens-Illinois that aligns with the business strategy, while building and sustaining a high performance organization. “Steve will bring fundamental HR technical skills and global experience in helping O-I improve capabilities in talent management and human resource development. Since our people are at the core of our competitive strength, this role is critical to our turnaround and transformation strategies moving forward,” said Steve McCracken, Chairman and CEO. Mr. Malia has more than 27 years of experience in human resources, planning and development, and labor relations. Most recently, he served as senior vice president of human resources for The Mosaic Company, a Fortune 500 mining and chemical company based outside of Minneapolis, which was recently formed by a merger that included his former company, IMC Global.
