5 November 1998: According to a recent press report, US-based OCI Chemical plans to increase by 800,000 tonnes per year its sodium carbonate capacity at Green River, Wyoming (US) from 1 January 1999. The capacity has been reduced from 1 million tonnes per year as originally planned, due to poor demand from Asia. The company is also to close an old 900,000 tonnes per year plant at Green River, bringing overall capacity there to 2.2 million tonnes per year. The market is expected to show stable growth again in 1999 or 2000, the report said. TG Soda Ash (Green River) is still for sale, and Solvay Minerals (Houston) has put off for 18 months the 400,000 tonnes per year expansion that was initially planned for the beginning of 1998. The ore mining capacity of the company will be increased by 1.5 million tonnes per year and it will become North America“s second largest soda ash producer.
