NorthGlass pushes curved glass to the limit

Glasshouse Theatre, located in Brisbane, Australia, was designed by Blight Rayner Architecture in collaboration with Snøhetta.

The idea of undulating the glass façade emanated from a prose-poem written by Aboriginal Elder and artist Lilla Watson which referred to ripples of the Brisbane River and fish swimming underneath the surface.

“We thought to make the transparent façade a setting for a kind of public theatre where people in the foyers would be seen variously clear and blurred from the street. And we wanted to embed the beginnings of First Nations narratives related to the context into the design,” said Michael Rayner, Director of Blight Rayner Architecture.

Here, glass is no longer simply a façade material, it has become the core language of architectural expression. The wave-like glass façade gives the theatre lobby a dramatic and dynamic identity.

The project features large-format, tight-radius, double-curved insulated laminated tempered glass provided by NorthGlass: Approximately 7 metres in height, with a minimum radius of just 1 metre, approaching semi-circular curvature and continuous transitions between concave and convex surfaces to create a fluid, water-like effect.

This was not only a challenge of form, but also an extreme test of precision and optical quality — any slight deviation would be significantly amplified across the façade.

To meet the project’s demanding requirements, NorthGlass developed a new generation of glass bending equipment and upgraded manufacturing processes, achieving major breakthroughs in roller-wave control and optical distortion control. As a result, these highly complex curved surfaces are not only possible to produce, but also visually clean, stable and elegant.

This project pushed equipment, process engineering, and manufacturing capability to their limits, while also reflecting the evolution of contemporary architectural glass — from flat surfaces to free-form curved façades.

Behind every complex curved curtain wall lies ultimate control over precision, stability, and optical performance. This reflects a top-tier technological capability in the industry.
