Japanese company Nippon Sheet Glass Co. Ltd. has announced that it has started marketing two kinds of wireless fire prevention glass, Pyroclear and Pyrostop. According to the company, reinforcing treatment based on rapid heating and rapid cooling provides Pyroclear with double the strength of ordinary tempered glass. There is no need for the additives used in other wireless fire prevention glasses. There is also the advantage that the waste glass can be recycled simply. Pyrostop is a new laminated fire prevention glass consisting of several alternate layers of float sheet glass and sodium silicate. When the glass sheet is exposed to over 120C, the sodium silicate layers are foamed to shield off the flames and the radiant heat, so even if the sheet is heated to 900C-1,000C, the non-heated side of the glass remains at up to 140C for one hour.
