Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. has acquired a worldwide non-exclusive license from Research Frontiers Incorporated to manufacture and sell SPD-Smart(TM) light-control film, which has wide applicability in a variety of SPD-Smart products including architectural, automotive, aircraft and marine windows, as well as in instantly adjustable variable tint eyewear such as sunglasses or ski goggles. According to Research Frontiers, Nippon Sheet Glass has already begun working with, and will be buying SPD emulsion from, other Research Frontiers“ licensees, coating the emulsion into an SPD light-control film, and selling the film to companies licensed by Research Frontiers to make SPD-Smart end-products. In a window, sunroof, or other product using VaryFast(TM) SPD-Smart(TM) technology, the user can manually or automatically control the amount of light, glare and heat coming into a home, office, aircraft, train or other vehicle. SPD-Smart windows, which can reduce energy consumption, also block over 99% of ultraviolet (UV) radiation to protect occupants and prevent the fading of carpets, furniture, and artwork. The Nippon Sheet Glass acquisition of the license builds upon its position as a world leader in the production and marketing of superior film and glass products. As Yuichi Yano, Vice President of NSG UMU Products Co., Ltd. observed, “The addition of SPD film to our product line nicely complements the quality liquid crystal (LC) products offered by our UMU division. Further, it is consistent with the growing number of advanced product solutions recently introduced by our company, including our CLEARTECT(TM) self-cleaning glass for residential applications and our SPACIA(TM) vacuum glass for burglar prevention and sound insulation.” Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd was established in Japan in 1918 and makes architectural glass, building materials, automotive safety glass, and fiberglass . With annual revenues of JPY 270 billion, Nippon Sheet Glass employs approximately 12,000 people worldwide.
