Japanese company NH Techno Glass Singapore has started operations at Singapore“s first LCD glass substrate plant. The SGD 300-million facility in Tuas currently produces 60,000 pieces of mother glass a month. The company plans to increase this capacity by four fold to 240,000 pieces by 2005; enough to make one million units of 20-inch laptop panels. The parent companies of NH Techno Glass, Hoya Corporation and Nippon Sheet Glass, expect the LCD industry to grow 15 to 30 percent annually. Glass substrate is also expected to penetrate the television market as a substitute for cathode-ray tube. The current world market for glass substrates, used in laptops, computers and mobile phones, is estimated at SGD1.5 billion. This is expected to double to SGD 3 billion in five years.
