American Lancaster Colony Corp. has reported that sales and earnings continued to set new record highs through the US company“s second fiscal quarter, which ended on 31 December 1995. Second-quarter net earnings increased 12% to US$ 22,369,000 or 75 cents per share compared with net earnings in the corresponding three months a year earlier of US$ 19,981,000 or 66 cents per share. Net sales were US$ 239 million versus the previous figure of US$ 225 million. For the first six months, net earnings reached a record US$ 37,777,000, up 7% from US$ 35,301,000 a year previously. Earnings per share were US$ 1.27 versus US$ 1.17. Net sales were US$ 440 million, an increase of 6%. John B. Gerlach, chairman and CEO of Lancaster Colony, attributed the record performance to “a strong fall season in our glass and candle business and a good seasonal mix in retail speciality foods.” He added, “automotive demand continued to be soft both in original equipment and in the aftermarket.”
