4 June 1998: Workers at Zambia“s Kapiri Glass Products (KGP) recently staged a protest march against management, demanding to be paid their terminal benefits. KGP workers union chairman Howard Shike in his speech to MMD district chairperson for Central Province after a protest march said the privatisation of KGP has not benefited the ordinary workers. “It is rather unfortunate that the basic concept of privatisation has not been beneficial to KFP as a company,” Shike said. “The results have been disastrous on our part as workers. The agony that accompanies such a sombre scenario cannot be over emphasised,” he added. Shike also said the presidential directive to encourage home ownership has not been applicable to them because the houses were not sold to the workers. “Receipt of our terminal benefits cannot be guaranteed because we don“t know who is supposed to pay us,” Shike said. He said workers would like to get a feedback on the petition they presented to President Frederick Chiluba.
