28 May 1998: Japan“s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) is about to launch an investigation into the distribution of sheet glass, FTC Secretary-General Jotaro Yabe said. The probe is aimed at examining the progress made in the sheet glass market following the advice issued by the FTC in 1993 regarding the industry“s discriminatory practices. According to reports, the United States has been repeatedly urging Japan to open its sheet glass market. In 1993, the FTC said trade practices in the sheet glass industry were unfair to imports, pointing out that distributors handle only the products of designated manufacturers and rebates are given to those that sell specific makers“ products.
