Saint-Gobain will invest EUR 30 million in its Pisa, central Italy flat glass plant for a new warehouse and a production line dedicated to layered glass. However, the prospect of 90 out of 400 workers being temporarily laid off for two weeks in March 2009 has also been confirmed. The reports emerged after a meeting between company executives and the mayor of Pisa, Marco Filippeschi. According to council sources, Saint-Gobain will not proceed with the construction of a new float furnace, but will continue with the restructuring of the existing one. Unions noted recently that building the new furnace would have been useful for launching innovative types of glass production.
