Crystal makers from Italy“s Colle Val d“Elsa district have turned to the United Arab Emirates in their search for new marketing frontiers. The Crystal Consortium of Colle Val d“Elsa, led by its president, Giampiero Brogi, took part in “Italian Life Style”, the largest display of Italian products and services in the Middle East, held at the Expo Centre Sharjah, from 24 to 28 May 2006. The event was inaugurated by H.E. Sheikh Tareq Bin Faisal Al Qassimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Economic Development Department. Colle Val d“Elsa reportedly has 10% of worldwide crystal production and 90-95% of Italian output. However, the district has been losing jobs as the market has shrunk. Waiting to board the flight for Dubai, Mr. Brogi said the Arab Emirates market was attractive and growing. The first contacts between the Colle Val d“Elsa and the UAE began two years ago. Participation in the Italian Life Style show marked the official opening of the Emirates as a new market for the Crystal Consortium.
