12 February 1998: In the north-western Iranian province of Azerbaijan, work on the fibre optic project which connects Asia to Europe has now been completed. Farhang Bashiri, managing director of the provincial telecommunications company, said that the 158-kilometre provincial section of the project aimed at developing international communications networks is now operational. The implementation of the giant project in the province has cost over IR 14 billion, he said. Bashiri further stressed that by putting the network dubbed “telecommunication silk road” into operation, international links between 17 countries and some 100 large cities throughout Iran will be increased. The 23,000-kilometre optical fibre line starts in Shanghai, China, and stretches to Frankfurt, Germany.
