A glass beads cluster scheme, approved by the Indian government, was launched at the premises of Banaras Beads Ltd. (BBL) in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) on 5 February 2009. Addressing the launch, joint director (industry) V.B. Vahan said central and state governments were interested in the welfare of poor artisans. Efforts would be made to ensure the benefits of the scheme to all glass bead artisans. Around 250 glass bead artisans were present at the launch function. They were informed of the terms and conditions of the scheme. BBL managing director Ashok Gupta said any artisan could join the cluster as a shareholder. So far, 38 have applied.
