23 October 1997: Production has begun at Guardian Flachglas GmbH“s new flat glass plant at Wolfen, Germany. The official opening was attended by Chancellor Kohl. The US parent company Guardian Industries Corp. invested a total of DM 270 million in what it claims is the world“s most modern flat glass plant. The German government and the state of Saxony-Anhalt contributed DM 73 million. The new plant has a workforce of 270. Joachim Goebeler, personnel manager at Flachglas GmbH, said that revenue this year would be DM 100-120 million, increasing to DM 150-160 million in 1998.
