A severance offer is reportedly in the works for former workers at the now-defunct Guardian Fiberglass plant, where Guardian and the United Steelworkers of America have been in discussions for months regarding pay for the Erin workers. We“re still working on something . . . . It“ll probably be something positive, union area co-ordinator Tom Walsh said in a telephone interview from the union“s Cambridge headquarters. Walsh added the union would try to meet with its members over the next few weeks to present the offer from the company, even if it may not be until early January 2011. In summer 2007, 85 members of Local 271 walked off the job in a new labour contract dispute with management of Guardian Fiberglass, which led to a lengthy strike at the fibreglass insulation manufacturing plant. In summer 2010, the Michigan-based parent company Guardian Industries announced that it no longer needed the plant and was closing it permanently.
